We are excited to announce that the Materials Research Society (MRS) has named Leader of MOSAIC center, Professor Jiwoong Park, of University of Chicago Department of Chemistry and the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago the 2025 recipient of the prestigious David Turnbull Lectureship! This highly esteemed career award recognizes scientists for “outstanding contributions to the fundamental understanding and communication of materials science.”
Professor Park is specifically honored for his pioneering work on the synthesis, fabrication, and application of two-dimensional van der Waals crystals, transforming these atomically thin materials for new, critical applications. This achievement places him among renowned scientific leaders who have a remarkable track record of foundational research that precipitates world-changing technological advancements.
We are incredibly proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition of his innovation and leadership. Read the full story here: https://chemistry.uchicago.edu/news/materials-research-society-honors-professor-jiwoong-park-prestigious-turnbull-lectureship

MOSAIC Workshop Registration Open!
CCI-MOSAIC Workshop Will be Held at UChicago on June 2nd to June 4th
The Center for Chemical Innovation (CCI) in Multimodal Observatory for Single Atom Imaging of Chemistry (MOSAIC) will host its strategic planning workshop sponsored by NSF on June 2nd to 4th, 2025, at the William Eckhardt Research Center (ERC) on the University of Chicago campus.
This strategic planning workshop integrates the cutting-edge material chemistry study within the multidisciplinary area including catalysis, soft materials, self-assembly, machine learning, in situ techniques, liquid-cell TEM, and 2D materials. This workshop will also focus on prospecting the next groundbreaking paradigm on chemical science and research to understand reaction mechanisms and structure‒property relationships at previously inaccessible spatiotemporal resolutions, aligned with the goal of MOSAIC CCI.
Led by Prof. Paul Alivisatos, the participants includes MOSAIC CCI Phase I leaders: Jiwoong Park, Robert Klie, Maria Chan, Qian Chen, Gregory Girolami; and invited speakers: Joshua Agar, James De Yoreo, Xiangfeng Duan, Kristen Fichthorn, Joseph Francisco, Anatoly Frenkel, Oleg Gang, Jeffery Greeley, James, Hone, Yu Huang, Raymond Schaak, Mitra Taheri, Dimitri Talapin, Hailiang Wang, Hongliang Xin, Ting Xu, Peidong Yang, and Yugang Zhang. The detailed agenda will be posted in May.
The workshop will include daily panel discussions and poster sessions. We are accepting poster submissions and encourage interested participants to present their posters and to foster lively discussions. The workshop will be open to public with registration until May 15th. Registration Link. (Same as QR code on the right)

CCI-MOSAIC Project Kick-Off at the University of Chicago
The Center for Chemical Innovation in Multimodal Observatory for Single Atom Imaging of Chemistry (CCI-MOSAIC) hosted its inaugural event on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at the Gordon Center for Integrative Science (GCIS) within the James Franck Institute on the University of Chicago campus. This milestone marked the start of a collaborative effort involving students, postdoctoral researchers, and principal investigators (PIs) from the University of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
Led by Prof. Paul Alivisatos, the event commenced with a review of the center’s ambitious goals to push the boundaries of single-atom chemical imaging. Participants engaged in presentations, brainstorming sessions, and discussions on the center’s research aspirations. The day continued with a networking lunch, a poster session featuring ongoing research, and concluded with a networking dinner, fostering connections and collaborations across institutions.
